We are delighted to welcome Dr Jakub Morawiec to the UHI Institute for Northern Studies. Dr Morawiec is an associate professor at the Institute of History, University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, Head of the Centre for Nordic and Old English Studies at the University of Silesia and co-organiser of the Jómsborg Conference series.
In his time with us, he will be working with research students in a workshop on ‘The legend of Jómsborg – its origins and development’, in which a series of texts, both Old Norse and Latin, document the development of the Jómsborg legend.
The workshop will draw out the legend’s political contexts and distinguish the cultural/social factors that shaped its growth. During the workshop, students will have a close look at some of the accounts in order to investigate their relations and current ideologies that made the legend, and Jómsvikinga saga, so lively and colourful a story.
This collaboration between the University of Silesia and UHI Institute for Northern Studies is part of a series of international partnerships the Institute for Northern Studies is establishing across Europe and the world.
Later this week on 24th September, Dr Morawiec, will join Jenny Murray, Curator of Collections (Archaeology) at Shetland Museum and Archives, Dr Andras Mortensen, Associate Professor of History at the Fróðskaparsetur Føroya and Professor Andrew Jennings (INS) at the Faroes Shetland Research Symposia, where he will present his research on ‘Rognvaldr Kali Kolsson’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land and contemporary European politics’
Currently, Dr Morawiec is working on Earl of Orkney Rognvald Kali Kolsson’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He is especially interested in the circumstances of the expedition and its impact on Earl’s politics, his poetry, and his status as the saga hero.
