Current historiography portrays James V as a Renaissance prince, and discusses his court, relations with the church and France, and his marriages. By taking a closer look at his governance of his periphery (his western and northern Isles) and relations with his neighbours (in particular Ireland and Denmark-Norway), this paper seeks to re-evaluate James’ reign, engaging with concepts of kingship, and questioning the extent to which James really was an imperial monarch.
