As part of the Institute for Northern Studies Autumn – Winter Seminar Series Dr Alison Cathcart of the University of Stirling presents ‘They ‘offered to give what they do not even hope to gain’: Ireland, Orkney and Shetland, and kingship in the reign of James V.’
Recorded on 25 November 2021.
Current historiography portrays James V as a Renaissance prince, and discusses his court, relations with the church and France, and his marriages. By taking a closer look at his governance of his periphery (his western and northern Isles) and relations with his neighbours (in particular Ireland and Denmark-Norway), this paper seeks to re-evaluate James’ reign, engaging with concepts of kingship, and questioning the extent to which James really was an imperial monarch.
